Myth of a Summer
Moon Review
Dorothy H. Borger, Retired Educator
The last day of the school year was yesterday. The summer activities have
become a reality. Conflicts, feelings, and struggles of every day life are
embodied in this story. The early teenage children and families located in
Lee County in the Appalacian Mountains bring this story to life for the
reader. The depression years, the backwoods community, and the need for
these children to become adults long before their time keep the reader
engrossed to the last page.
As I read this story, I found myself comparing their times with mine. Their
family hardships, closeness, lack of conveniences and various attitudes of
each character add color to each page. I feel readers of all ages would make
these comparisons and grow in understanding as a result.
I found the literature value and the beautiful flow of words to be the
benchmark of this book. Yes, it was written for the teenager, but what an
opportunity for the adult reader to revisit their past and share their
memories as well as the book.
I feel the book is truly a generation connector and will be re-read many
times.
